Deathday Party - Ghost Pains

Deathday Party is a gothy-newwave-postpunk band from LA, in the vain of joy division and former ghosts.
I think I could probably do without the Harry Potter and Antichrist references, but then again I dislike most things. But with that said I think this album is really catchy and good. I've listened to it a ton the past few weeks.
Apparantly they are finishing up a few extra songs to add to this LP, so it is not out yet. But if you like it, keep an eye out and pick it up. It'll be released on Desire Records sometime soon.

Angus - OST

Since it's been so long since i've posted anything, I am gonna do a double post today.
First is the soundtrack to the movie Angus. This movie came out when I was 10 years old. I was in 6th grade and my mom took my sister and I to the Camelview theater in Scottsdale to see it and I was obsessed. I thought it was the funniest, best movie i'd ever seen. When it came out on video my sister and I bought it and watched it repeatedly. I can still quote this movie from beginning to end. In addition to being such an amazing coming-of-age movie, it has one of the best soundtracks in the world. Literally every song on here is great. This soundtrack was one of my very first introductions to punk music and I loved it as much then as I do now. It features Green Day before they were broadway assholes, one of the best Weezer songs ever written before they became almost as big of dicks as Green Day, 2 amazing Ash songs, Smoking Popes, the Riverdales, Dance Hall Crashers.. so many gems on this one. And don't let the Goo Goo Dolls influence your decision on whether or not to check this out.. they used to be kinda good.
Its hard not to smile when I listen to this. Oh the pains of youth..

Track1 - Green Day: J.A.R.
Track2 - Ash: Name the Planets
Track3 - Dance Hall Crashers: Enough

Whirl - Distressor

Whirl is a shoegaze band from Northern California that caught my attention sometime last year when I ordered their 2 song demo tape. They have since recorded this 7 song EP that is a huge step up from the demo which was already awesome. 'Leave' was the track on the demo that really peaked my interest and the album version is infinitely better. My only complaint about the demo was how poor the quality was.. the recording was already pretty fuzzy and scratchy and that, on top of it being a cassette with all the added hiss, made the already fuzzy shoegaze sound pretty muddled. This is a much better balance.
I know you're probably thinking.. "ughh another shoegaze band, cool.." but really, try not to be dissuaded by the sudden influx of shoegazey type bands that have recently come about. Whirl definitely has a very straight up, quintessential shoegaze sound, but they do it so well. Hypnotizing noisy distortion and echoey female vocals.. you can't go wrong.
Buy the tape at http://www.bridgetownrecords.info/
Oh and Nicole Kidman is naked on the cover.

Afterlives - A Ticking Clock I Couldn't Stop

So what if I am a sucker for enemieslist bands.

This is the debut Afterlives album. One guy recording these awesome ambient/lo-fi tracks out of his home. Droney and emotional and super impressive. I really like this record.

After a super busy past few weeks of moving and school and work and house sitting and unpacking and cleaning, spending this morning laying in bed listening to this and relaxing felt really wonderful.

Ever The Optimist and Still Lakes are so awesome.

Christ - Only Every Other Day

Christ was a post-hardcore band from the 90's. To me this album sounds like Vitreous Humor meets Quicksand; but don't quote me on that.. I am at a loss about what to type here because I know close to nothing about this band aside from that this came out in 1996 (I think), they were from philadelphia (i think), and now there is some scottish dork who uses the name Christ. and makes techno music.
The guitarist for this band also played guitar in Prema. When I look up Prema on Last.fm, Baby Gopal is under the 'similar artists' category.
Only one person reading this is going to think that's funny.

I am quite certain the track listing on this is not right. but it's all i've got. so, sorry i guess.

Des Ark - Loose Lips Sink Ships

I daydream about being just a fraction as cool as aimee. even just 1/4 as cool. She writes incredibly amazing songs, sang backing vocals for the newest converge record, she's gorgeous, she toured with pygmy lush and ghastly city sleep AND she can eat an entire jar of vegan nutella. SOLD.

¡All-Time Quarterback! - S/T

Since I am currently sitting on the patio enjoying the perfectly cool Seattle breeze, I thought i'd post something local. ¡All-Time Quarterback! was a lo-fi side project of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie. Ben started ATQ in 1997 and he released 2 EP's which were later combined into one full length that was released in 2002. This is that full length. He is the only member of the band and even if you are not a fan of Death Cab, I suggest you give this a shot. It is more reminiscent of really early, less produced Death Cab with a fuzzier, more raw sound. Although don't let that description be misleading, this is very mellow and indie-pop. The song "Why I Cry" is amongst my favorites on the album and is actually a cover of a Magnetic Fields song. To be totally honest, I have never been much of a fan of the Magnetic Fields and prefer the cover to the original (although the original is quite good). This album sounds like what I hoped bands like She and Him would sound like; I mean, she is his wife. But instead, She and Him sound like caca. What a shame...
At least Ben got it right.

Bedhead - Transaction De Novo

Because I am feeling mellow today..

Bedhead was a slowcore band from the 90's and transaction de novo was their last full length released in 1998. The songs are slow and simple yet beautifully layered with sort of monotone, almost spoken vocals. This is one of my favorite records to sleep to (along with isis' oceanic.. not sure what that says about me or my sleep behavior, but whatever). If you don't already know this album, give it a shot.. lay down somewhere relaxing under a ceiling fan and put on "More Than Ever" and try and tell me you don't feel at ease.. or a little depressed.

Sebadoh - III

This is such a good album that I have recently revisited after a long long lapse. I hadn't really sat down and listened to Sebadoh since my senior year of high school, and I am now kicking myself in the ass wondering why not?

If you are not familiar with Sebadoh they are a lo-fi indie-rock band from the late 80's and early 90's featuring Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr. fame. Their 1993 album Bubble and Scrape was my first introduction to Sebadoh. Their first 2 albums are more folk influenced but while still maintaining a lo-fi 90's weirdness. III (their third album, duh) was released in 1992 and ventures out a bit more in their sound. I'll be honest, I don't love every song on this record. BUT, the really great tracks like "Truly Great Thing" and "Spoiled" more than make up for the tracks I could live without like "Smoke A Bowl" and their cover of "Wonderful, Wonderful."

I really hope the fact that there is a track on this album called "Smoke A Bowl" doesn't actually stop anyone from downloading this album (although I couldn't blame you). It's good, I promise.

This album was reissued in 2006 with a bonus disc, so it totals at like 50 something songs. This is not that version. Sorry. (not really). This is just the regular '92 version. You might recognize the last track from the movie Kids.. Oh and speaking of Kids. Lou Barlow was also responsible for Folk Implosion. Just a little FYI, in case you didn't already know.

Lorelei - The Bitter Air 7"/Asleep 7"

Lorelei was a lo-fi shoegazey/indie pop band from Washington DC in the 90's. Over the years, due to lineup changes etc, the band changed pretty drastically in their sound. The two 7" posted below will show some of that difference. I really like both of these 7" despite the changes, however I just can't get down with the later stuff. The first 7" is marked by swirley guitars and echo-ey female vocals, pretty much just what you'd expect from a 90's shoegaze band.. The second 7" starts veering away from that classic shoegaze sound but still maintains a nice balance between the early sound and the later stuff which just sounds like cheesy indie rock to me. However, I think both these 7"'s are gold.

Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness Parts 1 & 2

Because of the positive feedback on my last post, I am going to post Have A Nice Life's full length which is a 2 part album spanning 5 years of recordings from 2 gentlemen by the names of Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga who make up this fantastic band along with various collaborators. I really, really love this record. It's dark and catchy, it's moody and ethereal, it has the darkwave sound that I am such a complete sucker for without ever being cheesy or sounding cliché. I don't own an actual hard copy of this although I should, despite my lack of a cd player other than in my car. But boy howdy, what I wouldn't do to own this on vinyl. One perk of owning a hard copy is that it comes with an insert that.. well, just read this..

"Over 80 pages in length, written by a University of Massachusetts History professor, this book explores the deep religious symbology we used for inspiration while writing the record. The songs contain elaborate references to 12th century apostasies; the book will help those without a background in religious history to understand their meanings."

cool.

You may download the record here, although I definitely encourage everyone to go to www.enemieslist.net where you can order the cd or a digital download for a mere $5 which includes the artwork and booklet in .pdf format. It's worth it.

All they taught you at school was how to be a good worker. The system has failed you, don't fail yourself.

Isis - Oceanic

If you don't already have this album, you are missing out big time. In my opinion, this is the total sweet spot during Isis' career. This album came out in 2002 and it is thee perfect balance between their earlier metal and hardcore influence and their now almost totally ambient sound. This is, by far, my favorite release of theirs. It's very heavy, but can still put me to sleep. I think it is a perfect album from beginning to end.

Le Pré Où Je Suis Mort - S/T

Because I somehow managed to earn an A in my French class this past semester, I am going to post some French screamo. Le Pré Où Je Suis Mort is a bit more mellow than some of the other european screamo I have heard, kind of nestling into a nice mid-point between screamo and post-rock. Their songs are a bit on the long side, but manage to hold my attention and never feel boring. These 4 tracks are all that has been released so far, but you can order the cd, lp and canvas tote bag for 10 euros, which is like around 12 dollars in usd at www.comisnotwords.com.

p.s.
Le pré où je suis mort means in the field where I died. All my struggles with the passé composé became worth it when I was able to translate this. It's the small things ya know.

The Amps - Pacer

I am beyond excited that people are actually reading this blog and hopefully downloading and enjoying the music I've been posting. I am going to try and post a few times a week, so keep checking back and feedback is very welcomed and appreciated.

So, The Amps were an alternative indie rock band started by Kim Deal in the mid 90's. In the event you do not know who Kim Deal is, she was the bassist for the Pixies and later formed and played guitar in the Breeders. When I was in Jr. High, we had to watch channel 1 in home room which was like a teen news show, and Last Splash was used as the theme song. I loved that song and that was my introduction to both the Breeders and the Pixies. The Amps only put out one record that kind of flopped before Kim went back to the Breeders and some of the other members went on to play in Guided By Voices.

Mono - One Step More and You Die

In honor of Mono playing one of the most intense and amazing live shows I have ever seen last night, I am posting their second full length record. If you have not heard of mono, they are an intensely powerful instrumental post-rock band from Tokyo, Japan. All of mono's music is very guitar driven, but feel like this one is even more so and less orchestral than later releases. This band consistently blows my mind with the scope of emotion they can capture in their songs. Their music can transform effortlessly from twinkling and joyful to downright painful in a matter of minutes. If you haven't heard Mono yet, seriously, take the time to listen and thank me later.

Cult Ritual - 3rd e.p. (Manson Girls e.p.)

Since I posted the Merchandise EP, I figured I would post Cult Ritual's 3rd EP, also known as the Manson Girls EP. Cult Ritual is a hardcore punk band from Tampa, Florida. It's fuzzy and chaotic and all their records have sweet artwork. If you like it, you can download their full discography on http://cultmaternal.blogspot.com. I am choosing to post the 3rd EP because of their cover of Death Valley '69.

Merchandise - S/T e.p.

This is the self-titled E.P. from Merchandise, a post-punk band from Tampa, Fl. To be honest, I don't really know much about this band. I know this e.p. was recorded 2-ish years ago, i adore the bass tone on the recordings, and one of the dudes from Cult Ritual is in the band. (I really am the last person on earth that should have a music blog). This e.p. really is awesome. It's catchy and mostly pretty melodic and bordering right on the edge of being kind of dark. I'm Still Right, Target and It's a Man's World are my favorites. Enjoy.
